Rienow Hall opened in 1966, the first of two high-rise buildings planned for West Campus on Grand Avenue.  In 1968, Rienow II—later renamed as Slater Hall—was opened. 

Rienow Hall is named for Robert Rienow, dean of men at the University of Iowa from 1916 to 1946, and founder of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.
